Robert Earl “DJ Screw” Davis Jr. is the founder of the S.U.C. (Screwed Up Click) and created ‘chopped and screwed’ music, which is basically music that has been slowed down and had the lyrics chopped up into repeating phrases. Since his creation, the music style began to gain popularity all over the deep south, especially in Houston where DJ Screw was born. He started his career selling ‘Screw’ tapes from his car or at shows. After he was more successful, DJ Screw opened up his own store, “Screwed-Up Records and Tapes”.
Some rappers such as Bun B, Lil’ Flip, and Trae the Truth gained recognition, if not fame, through this album. His store is still open on 7717 Cullen Blvd. in Houston, Texas, where he used to let his friends freestyle on instrumentals/songs for free.
Dj Screw died on November 16, 2000 of a codeine overdose, but still remains a living legend. ‘Screw Tapes’ were re-released after his death and given a total of 248 chapter titles, which date 1994-2000. Screw chopped up many songs from popular artist like Paul Wall, Lil Keke, Mike Jones, South Park Mexican, and many more.
