Let’s be honest- Job searching is a real pain in the back. Most people find it nearly impossible to get an employer to consider them for the position, much less hire them. Here are a few tips on how to stand out from other applicants and get the job!
Tip 1- Put a Face With the Name
Hiring managers are usually the ones who are in charge of the store or business you wish to apply at and in turn are extremely busy. On top of their normal work load, there is a stream of applications coming in at any given time. In order to make yourself stand out, introduce yourself to the hiring manager when submitting your application. Inquiring about an interview shows your intrest in the position. If you are shy and don’t know how to approach them, just say:
“Hi, my name is [insert name here]. I’m submitting my application and would like to know when you’re available for an interview.”
If the application is online, go to the business the next day and let them know you’ve submitted your application and inquire about an interview. They may have a continuation of the application in store.
Tip 2- Sell Yourself
Aside from the basic information of your name, a brief description of your work experience, and whether or not you’re a criminal, your future employer knows nothing about you. Being a teenager, or young adult, you may not have any work experience but may have volunteer experience. You may have helped at your family business or babysat your neighbor. This is important information that helps get your foot in the door by changing the employer’s perspective of you. Let the employer know how experienced you are and what skills you have by submitting a resume with your application. A resume is a one page summary of your work experience, volunteer work, awards received, and references. This sheet of paper allows the employer to see your attributes that makes you more eligible for the position.
Tip 3- Follow Up
If you have received no call back from the employer within one or two days, call the business at a time when business is slow preferably before 10 A. M., and politely ask about the status of your application. Be sure to speak with the manager and bring to remembrance who you are.
“Hello, may I please speak with your hiring manager?” (Hiring manager gets on the phone.)
Hello, sir/ma’am. My name is (insert name here). I recently turned in an application to you and just wanted to check on the status of my application.”
Tip 4- Dress to Impress
Whether you apply for a cashier position at fast food restaurant or an internship at a corporate office, semi-formal attire shows your professionalism and seriousness about the job. Dress in neutral tons or soft colors like sky blue, coral pink, brown, or black. If you are a woman, make sure your clothes are not too tight or too short, and avoid showing cleavage. Men should be sure to wear a belt and iron their clothes. Taking out your piercings and covering your tattoos are recommended. Keep your outfit simple. You don’t want your employer to be distracted by your attire during the interview.
Tip 5- Thank You Letter
A day after your interview, email your future employer professionally thanking them for their time and considering you for the position. Because most people don’t do this, it gives you another advantage by making you stand out and shows your willingness to do above the required minimum. If, by chance, you weren’t the employer’s first choice, but for some reason the selected employee declines or quits, sending a thank you letter increases your chances of being selected.
Interview Preparation
While it is important to be honest and genuine during your interview, it is also good to be prepared and know the type of questions they will ask. Be sure to keep all your answers related to work and what you can do for the company. Arrive five to ten minutes early to show the employer you are punctual. Arriving early also gives you time to calm your nerves and get rid of any pre-interview jitters you may have.
The Bottom Line
All in all, show them your personality! Be genuine and show off your best qualities, professionalism, and what makes you the best person for the job. Relax and be confident in your skills and abilities, knowing that you’ve shown them what makes you unique.
