As the whirl of a new school year comes into action, all of the clubs and extra circular activities are coming to life as well. The debate team not only has substantial goals set for themselves, but they also have several events planned.
All of the debate students devote most of their attention to improving their skills.
“We practice every Wednesday for roughly an hour and a half,” Shelby Slade (12) said. “Then once we’re done, we go home and practice writing more speeches.”
Junior Jamal Monroe looks forward most to putting his skills to the test at debate competitons.
“The competitions are probably my favorite part,” Monroe said. “I like the fact that I get to go against other kids who are passionate about the same things as me.”
Aside from competing, the debate students also hold fundraisers so they can raise money to go on trips to compete.
“Every year we hold a fundraiser at E-Z’s,” Monroe said. “The restaurant gives us 20 percent of all the proceeds from that night, so we encourage all Mac students to go.”
However, this year they have their sights set on one specific trip in general.
“We would all really like to get to take a trip to Washington D.C.,” Slade said. “It is one of the goals we have set for ourselves as whole and our fundraisers will help us get there.”
The students are going to do everything in their power to make debate a success this year and hopefully, they can accomplish what they have set in mind.
