We’ve all been there; the countless hours staying up using apps, avoiding people and responsibilities in order to get a higher score on whatever app was trending that week only to become meaningless two weeks later as we slowly realize we wasted our lives staring at tiny glowing screens. Here’s a look into our old favorites that reached their expiration date.
07. Angry Birds
Angry Birds released in 2009 while the seniors were still in middle school. The objective of the game was to destroy the green pigs using the skills each bird possessed. Exploding, expanding, advanced projectile and sheer force kept kids and adults alike entertained totaling over 12 million downloads, but has severely lost it’s appeal and popularity in the past five years. We all have it, but never actually use it.
06. Fun Run
Fun Run, the former multiplayer game everyone used to obsess over faded away after a mere two week period of popularity. Linked to your friends through Facebook and Twitter and random players across the world who were online at the same time as you, the game had graphic images of taking out your opponents with weapons and gathering boosters to increase your speed to see who would win the race. So over it.
05. Temple Run
Still popular among young kids, Temple Run was a highly addictive survival game that hit it’s prime 2012, it has since dwindled out. Running from some sort of demon monkey after stealing a treasure, the objective was to run through and survive as many booby traps as possible. A great way to kill time, but highly overrated.
04. Kik
The messenger service that had the potential to be a text service to family and friends abroad has since developed into an OKCupid style app where everyone shared their usernames on social media in order to flirt with strangers they thought were cute. Yuck.
03. Candy Crush
Let’s face it- the only reason we check our Facebook still is to send requests for more lives on Candy Crush. There are cheats on how to get more lives and we’ve all uttered the words, “What level are you on?” when we look over our shoulder or hear the familiar ringtone of the app opening up. It’s still on all of our phones and iPods, just more ignored than usual.
02. Quiz Up
Available for iPhone only, Quiz Up let users sign up and find friends through Twitter or Facebook, giving them ten questions of trivia against any subject of their choice to play against a user around the world or one of their online friends. Subjects on everything from television shows to school subjects to movie quotes, players alike were hooked. World rankings made us feel like royalty of the internet, but a few weeks of quizzing ourselves and it felt more like a chore than a test of intelligence. Yawn.
01. Flappy Bird
The insanely hard addicting game with countless copycat apps was taken down from the store by it’s creator because he couldn’t handle everyone’s intense reactions to the point where players broke their phones over it. Phones with the game still on it are going for as much as $800 on eBay and Craigslist. So many tweets and posts about it, but gone forever from the app store.
So many apps with a short lifespan, it leaves countless possibilities for what the next craze will be, and how soon it’ll get here.
