Baseball recently lost their spot in the playoffs to a crushing defeat of 13-5 in the second game of their best-of-three series against O’Conner. They had advanced to round two of the Region IV-5A area playoffs and ended their 2014 season with an overall record of 22-12.
“The team had a good season,” varsity player Michael Sanchez, 12, said. “I think it was also good we came second place in the District.”
The Brahmas gained this title, and their first taste of victory for the playoff season, after winning their series against San Marcos. Despite suffering a major defat in their first game, 6-0, they snatched a spot in round two after winning game two 5-2 and game three 14-2. In round two, however, they lost game one 6-4 and game two 13-5 to O’Conner.
“I thought that we fought pretty hard,” Sanchez said. “We started off slow in that last game and picked it up, then it dropped back flat again, but I don’t think there is much for us to work on. Just keep fighting.”
Now that their season has ended, the players have the rest of the school year to practice as a team before breaking for the summer and losing their seniors.
“I’m going to miss it” Sanchez said. “It’s tough since we all grew close and we’re like brothers.”
However, this gives the returning players a chance to step up next year.
“Losing our seniors is tough because those are the ones who helped us out the most,” varsity player Justin Esparza, 11, said. “But next year (Coach Alfieri) is gonna make us try a lot harder and be the leaders.”
Predictions for next school year’s season are positive, and the team seems to think they will excel next year.
“I think we are going to be a lot better,” Esparza said.
