A 2-1 victory over Johnson Feb. 24 capped the first round of district play for the boys soccer team. They end with a record of 4-1-1 (W-L-T) in district play and hold the tiebreaker over Lee, who holds the same district record as them, after a 1-0 victory Feb. 13.
“The target’s on our back now,” Coach Damion Simmons said. “Everybody’s going to be looking to take us out.”
After struggling to score in the preseason, the team has gone a sudden scoring outburst. Sophomore Ricardo Vidal leads the team with four goals, all of those being from the past two games.
“[His scoring is a result of] just getting use to the play of the 4-5-1 [formation],” Simmons said.
Out of the 27 players on the team, 18 of them are juniors and below. Also, seven of those are regular starters for the 11 man lineup.
“We’ve still got a lot of growing up to do,” Simmons said. “We get better, and that’s the goal of our season, to get better every game.”
The team starts the next round of district play against Madison Feb. 27 at BAC-East.
