There is never enough space in the cages during baseball season and this year is no different as the team prepares for one of the more anticipated seasons in recent history. Preseason ranked 5th in the city by MySA, Mac has high expectations for this season which is understandable as they have talent throughout the order and in the dugout.
The Brahmas are led by a strong senior class that includes P/3B Steven Cardone, OF Isiah Dennis, OF/P Derek Stallworth, and IF/P Jacob Sandoval. Juniors IF Bobby Lepovitz and SS/P Josh Jung each have 2 years of varsity experience under their belts and both have the ability to get on base and field at a high level. The young bucks of the team this year are sophomore OF Zach Perez and freshman OF Tyler Vitt, both are capable of holding their own at the plate.
This year’s team is fundamentally sound, which is pivotal at the high school level where errors can easily cost you a game. Practice improves their awareness in fielding situations, base running, and their abilities overall.
“We do a lot of throwing drills,” senior Steven Cardone said “so that wherever the ball is hit we can make the throw to get people out.”
Junior Josh Jung is a preseason All-American with the ability to win games at the plate, or on the mound as a starter or closer. Josh has signed early to play baseball at Texas Tech.
Senior Steven Cardone can pitch a shutout game and is essential in the team’s batting order. He also believes that the team’s chemistry will help lead them to wins.
“(The team’s strength is) How well we gel together, because a lot of on the field situations depend on if we trust the other person to get their job done so we can do our job,” Cardone said
This season the Brahmas will look to make the playoffs for the 4th time in the last 5 years. Steven agrees that the team is capable of living up to their high expectations.
“As a goal we expect to win district, just because how well we think we can play and prepare for each team” Cardone said.
