The hopes for a trip back to Brownsville for the Regional tournament ended April 7 for the girls soccer team in a 2-1 loss against Corpus-Christi Carroll at Beeville Jones Stadium. Ending regulation in a 1-1 draw, the team went on to lose in penalty kicks 2-0.
“It was really tough, just knowing this is our last game together,” sophomore Carly Norment said. “Everybody was really torn apart.”Â
Both teams scored their only goals of regulation and overtime in the first half of the game. In the penalty kick round, the girls could not get a ball in, missing all four shots. Junior Mary Cardone managed to save two of Carroll’s shots, but it did not prove to be enough.
“It was sort of surreal [at the end of the game] because it was just unexpected,” senior Leslie Giles said. “I did feel like we were the better team and played better for most of the game.”
The team ended the district season in second place and had two playoff victories against Steele and Brandeis. While they may have not made it back to Brownsville, the girls feel this year to be somewhat successful.
“We worked really hard this whole season to get where we went,” Norment said. “Even though I believe we could’ve made it further, I’m just proud of us as a whole.”
The team will lose five seniors, two of which were regular starters. And, for most of those, this will be the end of their competitive soccer careers, one being Leslie Giles.
“I’ll probably play intramurals or something in the future,” Giles said. “We had a really good season, it was a good season to end on.”
