Coming off of a disheartening defeat last week to Clemens, the varsity football team recharged and smashed SouthSan 43-7 last Friday night.
With the addition of Roosevelt’s surprising season, district 26-6A has become competitively even and unpredictable. Reagan appears to have separated themselves at the top of the district. As for the final three playoff spots, your guess is as good as mine. This may be premature as we still have two weeks before the first district games commence. However, there is no question that these games are more than just tune-ups for the seven schools, they are showcases, sending strong statements to the other teams.
The Brahmas were heavy favorites this week. The team did not disappoint as they rocketed out of the gates, putting up 29 points in the first 12 minutes. After adding two more touchdowns in the second quarter, the team proceeded to take their foot all the way off of the gas pedal and allow their backups to gain valuable experience.
Standout performers included RB Daijon Williams and WR Jeremiah Cura who each found the end zone twice, and QB Tyler Vitt who had yet another efficient game going 7 for 9 with 4 TD passes.
Vitt, a sophomore, has thrown 12 touchdown passes and 0 interceptions through three games. Cura has been outstanding as well, leading the team in receptions(7) and touchdowns (4), while also returning punts and kickoffs. The two have obviously been clicking and Jeremiah attributes their success to preparation.
“We’re just working hard in practice,” Cura said. “We’re approaching every day hard and doing the right things to get the job done.”
The team faces Clark next week in, what should be another imposing win to cap off the non district season. The team needs to remain focused and get as many game-speed reps as possible in this, the last tuneup before opening district competition against Madison. Cura understands that the team can continue to improve while beating non-district teams by a hefty margin.
“To stay disciplined we keep working hard, we don’t take any drives off, and we try to get better every play,” Cura said.
