Varsity Volleyball’s season came to an end Tuesday night when the girls lost to New Braunfels Canyon in three sets.
The team had a terrific season, finishing 26-20 (W-L) overall and 6-6 in district play. Their solid record led to them coming in 4th in the district and securing a playoff spot.
MacArthur’s biggest win came the second time they faced Madison, when they were down 2 sets to none and came all the way back to win 3-2 and essentially lock up a playoff spot. The girl’s showed resilience throughout the season constantly bouncing back from lost sets or matches.
Breaking a small two year playoff drought, this year’s team showed that they had the awareness, and, most importantly, the talent to make the jump to the playoffs. Head Coach Margaret Mitcham understands that the talent present this year was quite rare for Mac.
“It’s very few and far between that we have two really good hitters in Maddie (Trawick) and Mallory (Potts), and a setter that’s as good as Jade (De La Rosa),” Mitcham said. “The combination of those three and the defense behind them really helps.”
Coach Mitcham eclipsed 525 wins in her career after this season and has won 61 percent of the matches that she’s coached. She is beloved by all of the players, and after 24 seasons of coaching, she knows that the girl’s should have no reason to be disappointed.
“We played well, we fought hard, we got as far as we did in three years, and they played better than us tonight,” Mitcham said.
This team had many individuals who were simply incredible and amongst the top in the city at their respective positions.
Senior setter Jade De La Rosa finished 2nd in the city in assists with 1,242, over 9.4 assists per game.
Senior libero Sarah Carrola came in 2nd in the city with her 5.7 digs per game.
Junior outside hitter Mallory Potts totaled 621 kills this season which put her at 2nd in the city.
Junior outside hitter Maddie Trawick accounted for 588 kills which placed her at 3rd in the city.
The two outside hitters finished with 1,209 kills in total, that is 9.15 kills per game between the two of them. The 1,209 kills is 236 more than the second best duo in the city. Both Trawick and Potts had a great season, and next year the duo will be expected to surpass this year’s numbers, even though they are losing an outstanding four year varsity setter in Jade De La Rosa.
The girls showed resilience and character win or lose this year as they always seemed to be enjoying their time spent on the court. Although their playoff run got cut short, they returned MacArthur back to prominence in volleyball, and had a damn good time while doing it.
