With the playoffs on the line, the football team underachieved in their 60-28 loss to Johnson Thursday night at Heroes Stadium.
After losing in their final regular season game, their record dropped to 3-3 in district play. In order for them to sneak into the playoffs they needed either Churchill (2-3) to lose to Madison, or Lee (2-3) to lose to Roosevelt. Thanks to an unreal 83-65 win by Roosevelt in a game that included 21 touchdowns, the Brahmas are in the playoffs. This is the first time that that the football program has made the playoffs in back to back years since the 98-99, 99-00 seasons, which is a testament to the players and coaches in the program over the last two years.
This year’s team has the offense to put up an early threat to the state contender Steele Knights in the first round of playoffs. However, the defense will be in for a rough night against a team that has linemen, receivers and running backs that all appear to be D1 bound. To absolutely no one’s surprise, Steele is 10-0, and has won their games by an average of 29.8 points, that is over four touchdowns.
Although Steele has made good teams like O’Connor, Smithson Valley, New Braunfels, and Clemens look like JV squads at times, the Brahmas will attempt to pull off an improbable upset Friday night at Lehnhoff Stadium. Mac will try to stay competitive against one of the state’s top teams, as even staying close would end their season on a high note. And if everything falls right for them, then maybe, just maybe, the unthinkable could happen.
