After watching a Thanksgiving parade last year, Mark Flowers Jr., senior, participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. After submitting a five minute piece of his musical talent, Flowers was selected to preform with other high school students from all over the nation for Macy’s Great American Marching Band (MGAMB).
“I really enjoyed being with all the band kids that were at the parade,” Flowers said. “It was an honor to be able to be apart of such an interesting experience.”
Flowers departed San Antonio a week before Thanksgiving Break, and participated in some light sight-seeing before heading to his rehearsal. The rehearsal lasted 10 hours, which in some respects is a very short time to plan and perfectly execute a TV broadcasted performance. But, these students did it with ease, finding their niche in the brotherhood of band members.
“Many people were just as excited about the event as I was, and would never pass up such an opportunity. Being around band lovers of my age really opened my eyes to the fact band is loved by many, many people,” Flowers said. “Fortunately I could see that on a national scale.”
