As we get closer and closer to Election Day, (Tuesday, Nov. 3), it’s important to register to vote.
In San Antonio, registration to vote ends Oct. 5, by mail and in person. To register to vote by mail, you must print out a registration form, fill it out, and mail it to your local election office. You must turn in your voter registration form at least 30 days before the official election.

In order to vote in Texas, you must be a US citizen, cannot be convicted of a felony, or a convicted felon, must be 18 years old, be a resident of the county in which your application to register was made, and have not been declared mentally incompetent by a court of law. Early voting begins Oct. 13, and has been extended through the 30.
Students can usually register to vote on campus, but with COVID 19 safety measures in place, social studies teachers have instead provided a link where students can fill out the form and turn it in to Mrs. Spittler (main office) or Mr. Shapiro (A217).
Students like senior Juan Perez understands the weight of this election. “I am lucky enough to have gotten my voter’s card last Thursday,” Perez said.
The district has also made Election Day a student and staff holiday. Faculty, staff and students will be given the entire day to vote and during a pandemic since many polling sites are on school campuses, this allows students to stay home and out of the way of the greater community.
Just because you aren’t old enough to vote, doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference. Teens 16 and up can become poll workers for up to $15 per hour. And, if you’re bilingual, you can serve as an interpreter at voting polls. A student election worker may communicate with a voter who cannot communicate in English in a language they understand.
