Do you have many items that are taking up space in your closet? Shirts that have been ripped or have stains that you are ready to get rid of? Why add to the landfill when you can put them in a bin to a company that will recycle them?
In the front of the school by the cheer shack there is a big bin called the Clothes Bin for recycling textiles. The Clothes Bin is a company that is here to help with textile recycling. “This is really like some type of fundraiser and usually when the school has budgets they have to be allocated to certain things so this is the good thing we could allocate it to,” Mrs. Jaramillo said.
Clothes Bin is a national franchise. We have a Clothes Bin here at MacArthur. The bins are placed strategically and in high traffic areas. Things that you can drop off in there are many items you are able to donate including jeans, skirts, dresses, suits, coats, jackets, gloves, hats, scarves, boots, heels, sneakers, socks, bras, underwear, wallets, totes, luggage, backpacks, towels, blankets, table clothes and sheets. It does not just have to be clothing items. “The clothing to donate are clothes that are not usable and is something that you see and think okay I wouldn’t donate this so then at least we know there is a place for it to be taken and they will use it to recycle,” Mrs. Jaramillo said. The clothes bin is here to give the community a chance to help with the growing issue of textile waste.
85% of old textiles end up in the landfills, but by putting these things in the Clothes Bin we can reduce that amount. Help the community get greener by placing old and unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles in the bin located in the front of the school.
