Time flies, whether that be when making unforgettable memories, growing up through adolescence and into adulthood, or just doing something you love. In the case of junior Sophia Nyunt, that time flies by while drawing the creative and meaningful artistic pieces that come into her head.
On Feb. 12, Nyunt, along with over 150 other students at the school submitted entries into the Visual Art Scholastic Event, or VASE competition. The art competition, based on the skills that piece displays as well as an interview about the artwork between the student and a juror, chooses about 10% of the submitted work for state. Nyunt was chosen for state as a part of just six students from the school who advanced.
“I’m still in shock that I was chosen,” Nyunt said. “Of course, I’m grateful for the chance to participate in state.”
The piece that Nyunt submitted to get to this point is a striking black-and-white image that displays a closeup of a boy screaming from a bird’s eye view. The image of the boy is cut off by a rectangular border and takes up just about three-fourths of the whole artwork. Through the thorough and even somewhat disturbing imagery that the piece gives off, Nyunt wanted to create a warning that youth is not forever, and display a message that we need to enjoy every moment that we have.
“I was inspired by the fear of aging and how time flies by so quickly,” Nyunt said. “Before you know it, you’re not a kid anymore.”
The other five students from the school that were selected to move on to state include Karol Solares, Nathan Goodge, Reese Saliceti, Shelby Lambrecht, and William Hwang. Along with these other students, Nyunt will move on to the state level on April 29 at San Marcos High School. For the competition that’s set in over a month, Nyunt has her eyes set on a prestigious prize.
“It’d be amazing if I won the Gold Seal at state,” she said.
