While some people know senior Emanuel Sanchez as an easygoing basketball fan, he is also a nationally acclaimed fencer. He recently qualified for the Puerto Rican Fencing National Junior Team, which is a huge opportunity for his future. Find out more about this talented student.
Q: Can you explain what being on the national team in Puerto Rico means for you now?
For me, it’s a good thing to add to my college resume. NCAA Fencing loves to see international fencing experience, so that helps me out a lot. It also means that I get to fence internationally, so I think there are a few world cups, one might be in Brazil. I think another one’s in Saudi Arabia, so I’d travel with the team, and we get points, and hopefully, we do well.
Q: What does a normal day look like for you?
Wake up around 5:30, do homework, take a shower, eat, go to school, drive up to Austin, practice for a couple of hours, drive back, take a shower, and go to sleep.
Q: What are your goals after high school?
I really want to pursue a degree in sports management. I really enjoy being in the sports world, and I’m taking AP Stats now and I love the business aspect of it. So anything that revolves around fencing or basketball I would love to do, so maybe some administrative stuff, maybe some coaching, and college of course, and a degree.
Q: What college?
UIW is where I want to go. It’s my number one choice, and Cleveland State is my number two choice.
Q: What made you get into fencing?
I lived in Philadelphia when I was about in 4th grade, or 3rd grade, somewhere around there. I had a lot of energy as a kid, and so my mom found a fencing club by our house, and so basically she was like “Hey let’s just try this out.” So I tried it out for a week and I really enjoyed it, and I just stuck with it ever since.
Q: Is there anything else you want to mention?
I would like to give God the credit for everything I do. It is a blessing and a privilege to be able to fence and I’m very thankful that I get to do that, so thank you God for that.
