Many of the fine arts classes have new directors this year, but orchestra is the only one without an assistant director. The new head director Sarah Hayter is leading all of the orchestra classes on her own, and is making her own statement at MacArthur.
Q: What are your goals as a new director at Mac this year?
To maintain what Dr. Garverick had established, but to put my own stamp on it is really it. She left a great program that I inherited so I want to keep it great, but transition it to my program.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Mac so far?
A lot of things. It’s just a good, welcoming environment. The kids have been very welcoming, the staff has been very welcoming, the other fine arts have been very welcoming, so that’s it. Just how open everyone is and willing to help.
Q: What about teaching orchestra do you enjoy the most?
I think that it’s not the same every day. While there’s some things that are the same, I have to think about what we’re doing every single day to make us sound better, and it’s different for each group.
Q: How have you seen music benefit your students?
It’s the emotional relief for the day. School stinks, the hallways are rough, people are who they are. And in here it’s just a welcoming, safe environment where people get to make music and forget about all the stress of the real world.
