Sabrina Carpenter’s new album Short n’ Sweet lives up to its name. Carpenter delivers everything pop and sunshine with hit songs like Espresso and Please Please Please featured on this instant classic. She dropped her album emails i can’t send in 2022 and debuted at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart but despite that album doing tremendous, it was not nominated for any awards at the 2023 Grammys. The brand new album is full of songs that have the potential to win Carpenter Album of The Year. It’s a short album with a total of 12 songs and spans over a total of 36 minutes. Now does the album’s name make more sense?
On this album, I thoroughly enjoyed every song with some of my favorites being Good Graces, Bed Chem, Juno, and Slim Pickins, and the reason why is because they tend to just sit right. Despite them being insanely relatable, they’re also just perfect pop tunes that scratch an itch in my brain. Finding good or even great pop music nowadays is so hard, but Sabrina Carpenter managed to make an album full of it. One of my favorite lyrics in this album comes from the song Slim Pickins where she says “Jesus what’s a girl to do? This boy doesn’t even know the difference between ‘There’ ‘Their’ and “They’re’.” It’s a funny line and shows Carpenter’s emotion towards the person she’s with very well.
There are not a ton of flaws on this album, and while I do believe it’s near perfect, Dumb and Poetic, Lie To Girls and Don’t Smile being more sad than the rest of the album was a very big tone switch. While those songs are still pretty perfect, they did cause a shift in how I was listening to them. I just thought that they made it so I was feeling very pumped up while listening and the mood changed very quickly and very suddenly as well.
Overall, this album was astonishing and very surprising. After hearing Espresso and Please Please Please when they dropped as singles I knew this album was going to be astounding, but this was a strikeout. It succeeded all expectations and went above and beyond what I’ve seen before in modern pop music. I can’t wait to see what other major projects she announces later in the future. I give this album a 9.5/10 because despite the shift in mood at some points it was still pretty perfect.
