Students are struggling in the Algebra II class because they do not have a teacher dedicated to their learning experience, but rather have a constant rotation of substitute teachers, which is negatively impacting many of the students’ grades in the class.
Each math subject needs to be taught by an experienced, dedicated teacher.
Math is a vital subject that provides high school students with essential skills in logical thinking, problem solving, and attention to detail. However, without guidance from a qualified instructor, students may find the subject beyond overwhelming and difficult. Especially in this generation, the mental health of students has become a priority in society. If the school wants for its students to be successful and well rounded, everyone needs to follow through on their responsibilities regarding the students’ educational experience.
Math helps students to reach their full potential. Naturally, students are not going out of their way to dedicate hours of their time to solving for x, but part of the reason why students are required to meet a certain diverse credit requirement in high school, is to help students figure out what career they want to pursue after they graduate. However, if the students are disrespected in their need for being properly guided through the learning experience in any one of their courses, that time they spend in class is not being utilized wisely.
Most importantly, students earn the rightful opportunity to be successful in the classroom with all of their subjects. Even if a student is not interested in pursuing math beyond their high school years, there are students that strive for excellence in the classroom, but their ultimate goals of achieving a high grade in a subject are not even closely met, if there is no instructor also striving for the excellence of their students in return. Some people need more hands-on experience in the learning process and the ability to ask the teacher for assistance during class. Not everyone has the time in their schedule to attend tutoring of another math teacher in the school, who may not be quite as knowledgeable in Algebra II, if they are a Statistic teacher, for example. If a student has the goal of achieving a high grade in their class, it should not be made this difficult for them to accomplish.
Though it’s understandable that the task of hiring a new teacher for an open position can only happen so quickly, there should be more communication from the staff and administration regarding this issue. If there is difficulty in finding a teacher for the job once the school year has already reached a certain point, at the very least, one long term substitute teacher with the right math qualifications can be hired for the time being. If a teacher that specializes in that particular math course can’t be found on time, that is the next best thing that can be done for the benefit of the students taking this class.
If the school wants for the students to succeed in all subjects, the need of a teacher for the Algebra II class should be brought to attention and prioritized. It is not reasonable to expect the students to take extra time outside of class when it is not their fault that they may be failing. Whether it’s difference math teachers working together to create a lesson plan for these students, or putting the word out there to individuals looking to fill a position of this sort, this problem can and needs to be fixed.
