The ASL students will perform Christmas songs at The Forum at Lincoln Heights Senior Community on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:00 pm. Many of the students participating in this event are excited. These performers include junior Audrina Canales, junior Isabella Medina, and senior Skye Hall.
“At the Christmas show, we’ll have about 10 different songs,” Audrina Canales said. “They’re very fun, very Christmas-y; We bring a lot of energy and have some props that we use to entertain our folks and try to bring some new signs we learned.”
Though this is the first time ASL has created a Christmas event, they have done countless shows for their community. Some of the shows they perform are in their classes with songs of their choice that include amazing choreography and they even partake in teaching those who want to learn sign language.
“We’ve been practicing for about like 2 months, I think since October and November started. We’re doing it with some friends and classmates from different ASL groups like ASL 2 and 3.” Isabella Medina said.
These students work hard with their peers to create a magical and festive time for those attending.
“Sometimes practice is a little rough because we try to make it fun for the audience so we just try to add choreography but none of us are professional dancers so it’s kind of funny, actually. Like we’ll be practicing in the hallways and we’ll look like a bunch of fools but it’s so fun.” Skye Hall said.
The preparation included in this event is a lot; the students are doing the best they can to spread a little christmas cheer in the community while making it inclusive as well for the audience that include learning new signs.
“Mainly, we just want to make people happy and also just to spread awareness of the ASL program and kind of what we do to encourage people to join like incoming freshmen,” Hall said.
