Competing in Academic UIL contests the team will go up against area schools at Madison High School this Saturday. The University Interscholastic League, also known as UIL, offers a variety of academic categories that students can compete in. The organization is designed for students who are seeking to go to college and want to obtain scholarships.
Senior Cheyenne McBane competes in three contests, Ready Writing, Mathematics, and Calculator.
“It was brought up to me because of the various talents that I had in middle school and high school. And I thought it was a pretty interesting idea to be able to express that and show people what I could do,” said Cheyenne. “[For Ready Writing] I may go home and practice hooks, body paragraphs, how to effectively close the essay, things like that.”
The UIL mathematics contest takes about 40 minutes and consists of around 60 mathematical questions to answer.
“They give you about 70 questions to answer using a calculator, and it’s less about how good you can use a calculator and more how accurate your answers are,” said Cheyenne.
“It was more brought up to me because of the various talents that I had in middle school and high school. And I thought it was a pretty interesting idea to be able to express that and show people what I could do,” said Cheyenne.
UIL has given McBane the confidence in her academic abilities.
“When I was younger, I wasn’t that great at math, but now that I’ve been introduced to these higher level topics, and I’ve been given the practice and the resources to effectively get better at it, I think It’s done a lot more for me in my confidence and how I can effectively go to college, and make a good life for myself.,” said Cheyenne.
