Because of budget deficits and a decline in enrollment, the board received recommendations from the “Long-Range Efficiency Committee” to shut down three schools in the district on Monday. Driscoll Middle School, Wilshire Elementary School and Clear Spring Elementary School are the three that will likely be shut down next year.
Many students attended Driscoll for their middle school years and are devastated to see it closed.
“That was my old middle school and it’s upsetting to see that it is being closed down,” senior Brianna Fox said.
Over the last decade, the district has lost over 11,000 students and currently has around 56,000 students across 70 campuses.
“It’s a real bummer, something so important to me is just going to disappear like it never was there,” senior Bella Herrera said.
If this recommendation is approved it will take effect as early as the end of this school year leaving students and staff from those schools to scatter and find new places to learn and work.
“I’m disappointed that this is happening, my sisters were going to go there next year and now it might not ever happen,” sophomore Alyn Gonzales said. “It’s just really sad.”
