The Dreamworks movie Dog Man, directed by Peter Hastings, is the majorly anticipated movie for fans of the Captain Underpants and Dog Man book series. The film’s main voice actors did a great job bringing the characters to life with stars like Pete Davidson as Petey and Lil Rel Howery as Chief.
After a tragic incident, a police officer’s body and his dog Greg’s head are sewn together creating Dog Man. Dog Man’s job is to detain the villain, Petey the Cat, due to the constant terrorizing he brings to the city.
The movie’s theme is love. Lil Petey, Petey’s kitten clone, highlights what someone sometimes needs is a little bit of love, no matter the actions done by the individual; dog, person, or cat.
Being an animated film, Dog Man has a lot of great visual elements with an art style that remains faithful to the Captain Underpants’ movie. The animators did a great job adapting the book’s 2-D art style into a 3-D art style. The colors used for the movie are vibrant, expressing the emotion and tone of the scenes.
An aspect that the movie should have included is Petey’s backstory. Some backstory was provided, but the way that Petey lived with his mom as a kitten and struggled with a life without a father explained in the books, was a very deep moment that would have resonated more with the audience’s hearts.
With the runtime of this movie being an hour and thirty-two minutes long, the movie felt rushed. This brought a lot of content from the books which made balancing the amount of content with its runtime very difficult.
Overall, I award Dog Man a 4 out of 5 stars. I thought the movie was good, with great attention to detail and good humor. I’ll watch this movie again and I’d recommend a lot of people my age to watch as well.
