The hit game Minecraft finally made its debut to the movie industry ironically named, “A Minecraft Movie.” After months of getting teased and clowned online, the movie made 721 million dollars worldwide so far, making a stellar debut but, it leaves the question of whether or not if it’s actually a good movie.
The internet went on a rampage across social media expressing their hard love feelings towards Jack Black’s quotes. Especially when he says “chicken jockey,” which refers to a baby zombie riding a chicken found in the video game. The hype for the movie is uplifting and made the entertainment atmosphere exciting. The Minecraft movie brought an unforgettable experience to the audience that hasn’t been experienced before in the cinema industry. It has gone to the point where the movie theaters have to warn the audience before playing the movie in order to avoid misconduct, meaning no loud screaming and throwing popcorn while watching it.
The Movie itself was surprisingly entertaining considering the atmosphere which surrounded it on its release. It managed to maintain consistency and flow very nicely surrounding the concept of the video game world. For the people that grew up playing the video game, it complemented the film very well the nostalgia effect. The presentation of the movie was accurate for the world of Minecraft, containing the cube like structures, the odd looking fantasy characters, and having a solid perspective of the world.
The cast contributed excellently to the project. Jack Black, who played as Steve, received and delivered right back to the anticipating fans with his enthusiastic energy throughout the project. Jason Momoa, who plays Garret Garrison, was outstanding considering the minor role he had during the film as the background jokester. His acting with Black was hilarious alongside Danielle Brooks, who plays as Dawn, who did not have much film action but was super underrated as a character and should have received more screen time.
Although the movie had upsides, it had downsides. The plot is very predictable and feels a bit lazy. The film missed many opportunities including other game mechanics or in depth correlation with the actual video game but, it seems it’s all part of the filmmaker’s plan to make a sequel continuing the Minecraft legacy. The movie is obviously not meant to be taken seriously, which is good in their case because the filmmakers can make the idea of the movie so bad, it will turn out to be good.
At the end of the day, the “A MInecraft Movie” is pretty solid but is nothing crazy. What makes it stand out from other movies is the trend that it brings which has never been seen before. People celebrating and throwing popcorn when a certain scene happens makes the entertainment experience better but, if the rating is strictly on the movie itself, it is simply average. With all the features surrounding the movie, The Minecraft movie receives 3 out 5 stars.
