Jamming out on stage together has inspired San Antonio local band, Seaglass, to release their first EP ‘Milk’, coming out on Sep. 19 and paired with a celebratory show held Sep. 20.
Seaglass, composed of bassist/vocalist Diego Rodriguez, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Joseph Naranjo, guitarist James Bowling, and drummer David Sanchez, have been performing together for a little over three months. They’ve made themselves, and their samurai crab mascot, known amongst the local hardcore scene. The surf-punk band will host their release show at 526 Fitch Ave., featuring the supporting bands Urban Casket, Atomic Boredom, Midnight Dawn, Here We Are In January, and Eli Looke. Doors open at 5:30pm with a “pay what you can” entry policy.
“Well we chose to release an EP since we’ve had a surprising amount of people ask us to release our music since they actually want to listen to us, it’s pretty neat,” Rodriguez said. “The EP took all of us a very long time deciding every single possible outcome, from song names to the songs themselves it was at times annoying but overall a great time.”
The band put their EP together piece by piece, and pulled inspiration from many different places, people and eras of music.
“My improvisational guitar playing would most definitely be inspired by classical rock legends such as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. But I would also give equal, if not more credit to the Beatles for motivating me to take this path of writing music and truly making me appreciate creating music,” Bowling said.
In addition to inspiration, each member had their own ideas and ways they wanted to add their own flare, in order to include a more personal touch.
“I would say that for my drum playing, my inspiration is a mix of Travis Barker and Dave Grohl,” Sanchez said. “I’m inspired by Travis’s ability to play fast and the ability to throw in fills to add more flavor, and with Dave I’m inspired with his technical ability with the drums and sometimes I just play whatever I feel like and add my own flavor (my own inspo for songs).”
In order to celebrate and share all their hard work with the fans, Seaglass is hosting a release throwdown show. A lineup of five other bands that were scouted out and invited to join in.
“We are celebrating not only the EP release, but some of our favorite local bands and helping each other grow our audience and community by exposing them to these amazing and talented bands. We truly wouldn’t be here where we are without some of these artists’ support,” merch girl Haley said.
Although they’ve done a lot, the band couldn’t have done it alone. It took a few more people joining the team and supporting the band to get them where they are.
“I want to give a big shoutout to Nick Garza for seeing our vision and helping us create this beautiful EP,” Naranjo said. “I also want to give the biggest thank you to Haley for making the merch and running it so we could have the financial support to get our EP released, as well as making sure we look our best on stage!”
