“We came out strong and confident with a little anxiety thrown in the mix,” junior Miranda Arellano said.
Scoring the first five points of the game, Arellano and her teammates were sure that they were headed toward an easy victory. The team’s chemistry was ablaze and their defense was as strong as their offense. However, Roosevelts’ height, agility, and the dissipation of chemistry caused by substitutions seemed to throw the Brahma girls off their game, Ultimately making them lose their lead and allowing for the Roughriders to make a comeback.
During halftime in the locker room, tensions were high and the players and coaches were frustrated with how the game was turning out. Instead of sulking around, the girls set their sights on the Riders and made a tremendous comeback. With only 30 seconds left in the last quarter they went from being down 14 points to trailing Roosevelt by 8 points. Regardless of the score at the end, the girls pulled it together when the going went rough and pushed on until the last seconds of the game.
“There really wasn’t much we could do in the last 10 seconds,” Arellano said. “But we kept our heads held high and tried to pull something out of our sleeves.”
