Little kids from all over San Antonio bent down in the street with chalk in their hands and concentration on their brow. Don’t worry, they weren’t tagging! They were at Chalk It Up, the annual event that gives artists and children alike the chance to express themselves through art. Participants went to their designated areas in the street and created their masterpieces, leaving behind a collage of color. National Honor Society greeted newcomers with a smile as they pointed them in the right direction.
This is one of the many service projects that NHS took part of in 2011. National Honor Society (NHS) focuses on community service and includes only those who go above and beyond the standards of the average high school student. In order to be an NHS member, students must maintain an “A” average in all classes, complete comunity service hours, and be involved in other school and community organizations.
“We only accept the best and the brightest!” senior Ian Dorsa, President of NHS said.
Though NHS continues to do great things like community service projects and sponsoring events, they still feel there is room for improvement. One of their goals for this year is to “improve organization and participation,” senior Kaitlin Veltri, Historian of NHS, said.
NHS also plans to become more involved with the community by merging with other organizations.
“I think it would be cool if we worked together with other organizations… Even reaching out to NHS’s of feeding middle school would be awesome,” senior Savannah Richardson, NHS Vice President, said.
In the first semester, NHS completed over 19 service projects, including the San Antonio Food Bank Drive, Blue Santa, Rock n Roll Marathon, and Calf Scramble.
Mrs. Williams, the group sponsor, is impressed with the group’s hard work and dedication.
“It is an honor to work with such benevolent young adults. They inspire me to get out and do more,” Mrs Williams said.
