As a part of Mayor Castro’s SA2020 initiative to become a more “college-going community,” the City of San Antonio is partnering alongside GenerationTX, the San Antonio Education Partnership (SAEP), and the San Antonio Youth Commission (SAYC) to host Destination College from April 16-22. The festivities are outlined below:
Opening Ceremony : Monday, April 16
9 a.m. news conference at Café College, unveiling of Mayor Castro’s Destination College Fiesta medal, followed by a half-day Talent Dividend Summit focused on raising college completion levels.
Elementary School Night: Tuesday, April 17
Elementary School Night with college prep workshops for elementary school students and parents at cafécollege.
Middle School Night: Wednesday, April 18
Middle School Night with college prep workshops for middle schoolers and their parents at cafécollege.
Screening of the award-winning documentary, FIRST GENERATION, followed by a panel discussion with the film’s directors at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Park North.
College Signing Day: Thursday, April 19
College Signing Day Ceremony at Freeman Coliseum. Modeled after signing events for star athletes, the ceremony will spotlight graduating seniors who will announce their college plans for Fall 2012 in front of their families, community members and peers.
College T-Shirt Day: Friday, April 20
College T-Shirt Day. The entire community is asked to wear their favorite college t-shirt to work or school. Major employers who participated last year included H-E-B and the City of San Antonio.
Destination College Summit: Saturday, April 21
Destination College Summit at UTSA 1604 with educational workshops exploring the connection between career aspirations and college education. The event will end with GenTX’s Rock Your Future fest, where students will get to celebrate the college road ahead.
Youth Day of Service: Sunday, April 22
Youth Day of Service to connect students to various nonprofit organizations in San Antonio, giving them an opportunity to learn more about the importance of community engagement.
