Throughout my exchange year, I began to notice the big difference between American and Japanese foods. Here, the main foods will include bread, potatoes, hamburgers and pizza. At the cafeteria in school, they provide pizza, hamburgers, baked potatoes, and some Mexican foods over and over again. When I came here, I couldn’t get used to what American people usually eat because the foods here are completely different from the foods in Japan, which made me miss Japanese foods. In Japan, I usually bring my lunch to school and eat it in my classroom. The main food is rice, so I eat rice every day, but since I came here, I don’t eat rice as much as I used to. These differences made this year hard.
Also, I was so surprised when I realized how many fast-food shops they have and how big they are. When I first got here, my host mom took me to a hamburger place. I ordered a burger and was so excited to see how big it would be. After a while, I got a bigger burger than I was thinking. At that time, I realized that all the food is bigger here than in Japan. I don’t have as many fast food shops as America has in Japan. There are a lot of different kinds of fast food shops and they are so good. I have tried McDonald’s, Cane’s, Chick-fil-A and so on. We have McDonald’s in Japan but I don’t think I have the rest of them, so I keep eating McDonald’s and I’m getting bored with it. I wish I had many different kinds of fast food shops like here.
By staying here, I can find many differences every day. It can be good differences or bad differences when I compare here and Japan. Sometimes, it will be culture shock to me but looking for differences gives me a good opportunity to know their culture. So, I will keep looking and know about it.
