Trailers always leave room to speculate what will happen, and Marvel movies have caught on to this. Within each of these trailers are tiny hints, or easter eggs, that clue us in as to what to the plot will be about. Either way, here are the secrets hidden in three of Marvel’s biggest upcoming movies.
#3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man is back, still not played by Toby Maguire but by the recently famous Andrew Garfield. While the web head had a good first start in the 2012 reboot, the trailers are implying heavy clues that only nerds will know. It looks like the Oscorp company is going to create the Sinister Six, which is a team of six villains. In a quick scene in the trailer, the background shows the robot arms of Doctor Octopus, and the wings of the Vulture. Rhino and Electro are the headlining villains, played by Paul Giamatti and Jamie Foxx respectively. The leader of the Oscorp company, Norman Osborn, is known famously as the Green Goblin. So thats 5 of the 6 villains Spidey will fight in this movie or a future movie. It’d be easy to get one more villain in there, which would complete the 6. And hopefully at least ONE of the Avengers can help Peter out, because more than likely fighting 5 or 6 super powered villains will get somebody killed (cough Gwen cough), which in the comics happens a little too often to Spider-Man.
Hopefully the movies won’t follow that pattern, otherwise Sony might have to give the rights back to Marvel/Disney. Which might not be a bad thing if Spidey is to ever team up with any other super hero. Check it out on May 2nd
#2. Captain America: The Winter Solider
This trailer was full of easter eggs for hardcore fans. The Winter Solider in the comics is supposed to be Bucky, Cap’s sidekick, brainwashed by the assumed Nazi group Hydra, though it’s unclear if that’s the way the movie will go. Black Widow is back, and this movie will introduce Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. No sign of Hawkeye, which is a shame, as he’s the character with the least development. The number 42 pops up a lot during the trailer, and with talks between Nick Fury and Captain about what Fury is doing “isn’t freedom, this is fear”, it seems the Marvel movies are heading into the Civil War, an event in the comics that happened a few years ago that had the heroes taking sides when the government started regulating heroes and having them reveal their secret identities. The 2 sides were lead by Iron Man (who was pro-registration) and Captain America (anti-registration). The number 42 represents a prison that Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, and Ant Man (who’s getting his own movie after Avengers 2) make for super villains in another dimension, with no where to go should they escape. 42 also popped up in Iron Man 3 last year, as it was the most recent model Tony had made.
The series got frustrating at times, but hopefully a movie version can improve what the comic was trying to do. Since getting more than a handful of licensed characters in one movie is impossible at the moment, quality will have to out do quantity if Civil War has any chance of being made into a (good) movie. Check it out on April 4.
#1. Guardians of the Galaxy
Probably the least known upcoming marvel movie, the premire of the first trailer shows promise. All that’s really known about the story is that Star Lord steals a powerful orb, and has to team up with aliens to stop a war. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel do voice work for Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
One of the characters is supposed to have a connection to Thanos, the villain revealed at the end of Avengers. The Guardians themselves are like an Avengers team- in space… and with less known characters. However, these heroes probably won’t have a connection to the main movies until the build up to Avengers 3, when Thanos will become the main villain. So at least they’re planting these seeds early (pun intended). Check it out August 1.
