When I went out to take my puppy on a walk with my mom and dad on Monday night, I didn’t really think anything about the moon. It wasn’t on my mind, I was just thinking about tiring my dog out so he could go to sleep easier and not act up.
Then I looked up, and that’s when I saw it. The moon was so bright, with small, and very thin clouds surrounding it, and I noticed that it looked larger than normal. I got more curious the more I studied the moon, I wanted to know what it was, and when I looked up ‘why is the moon so big?’ on Google it told me that it was a supermoon. I kind of got excited, this was one of the first times I remember ever looking at one.
A supermoon is a full moon when it is at its closest point to the Earth. For the next three months the supermoon will take place. This supermoon will be the closest and brightest in 2016. It will also be the largest supermoon since 1948. The next full moon this close to the earth is predicted to happen on Nov. 25, 2034.
The moon experiences a gravitational pull towards the Earth, when it’s closer than usual to the ocean, which in return creates higher tides than usual. Astronomers used to call the supermoon a perigee full moon, or a perigee new moon. It was called that because that’s the name of the point where the moon was closest. The moon is a beautiful thing to look at and seeing it so close is just a magnificent sight itself.
As I continued walking, the moon just kept shining above me even through all the trees that my neighborhood had. Then I got to my house and it was right above it. I got so excited. I was so happy that I got to experience something like this, and I just wanted to remember it forever.
