While the end of the 2024 calendar year is drawing it’s conclusion, and as 2025 is around the corner we have one more month to get through and it’s the most festive one of them all. As Christmas is approaching rapidly most of us get into the holiday spirit by playing Christmas music. As Christmas songs have became a staple with the holidays with catchy jingles,or christmas carols the ultimate goal of getting the listener or the audience in high spirits, due to what time of the year it is. Therefore I will be giving my honest review on five popular Christmas songs and give my feedback on them.
1. Silent Night-The Temptations, 1970. The Temptations released their first Christmas album titled The Temptations’ Christmas Card. In 1970 they had five tracks with an allotted time of 32:27. The track Silent Night blends two great components that makes it a classic is mixing together a classic Christmas carol with Motown, to give it a very soulful feel to it. Eddie Kendrick’s vocals as the lead vocalist on the track makes it feel soothing and laid-back.
2. Sleigh Ride-The Ronettes, 1963. The Ronettes debuted their Christmas album ‘A Christmas Gift’ for you and the song Sleigh Ride is one of the more recognizable Christmas songs by the pop trio. The song was a cover of the 1948 version of the song and the catchy tune will get you into the Christmas spirit or the holiday spirit, as the song has a nice melody especially with the background vocals of “Ring-a-ling-a-ling, ding-dong-ding”. Making it sound like a really catchy song, 60 years later in 2023 the song peaked as high as #8 on the Billboard hot 100.
3. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town-The Jackson 5, 1970. The famous Jackson 5 made their one and only Christmas album in 1970. One song stood out and that was Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, as it is another song that has a Motown spin on this iteration of the song. As it has had many covers over the years.
4. Last Christmas-Wham!, 1984. In 1984 UK pop duo Wham! Released Last Christmas, The song is among one of the more favored Christmas songs, as George Michael wrote,produced,and performed the song. As of 2024 the track peaked to #3 on the Billboard hot 100 in the United States. And the song has had many covers by popular artists, most notably by pop sensation Ariana Grande.
5. All I Want For Christmas Is You-Mariah Carey, 1994. Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, became an instant holiday hit when it was released 30 years ago. In 2019 the song made a massive resurgence 25 years after it was released originally in 1994, ever since then the song is now a Christmas classic,as Mariah Carey has been dubbed the ‘Queen of Christmas’
These songs are a great example on what the holidays should be and what Christmas is as a whole.
