The four-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are looking to bring back another trophy after the past five-year championship drought. Gregg Popovich (Head Coach) and the Spurs are on a seven-game winning streak as of April 2. Coach Popovich and forward Tim Duncan are coming down to their final years in the NBA, and the time to win another championship seems to be now or never.
The Spurs are undefeated in the past two weeks and are driving into the playoffs. The latest victims of the Spurs have included prestigious names: the Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets, and Phoenix Suns. Tim Duncan put up excellent numbers with the addition of being Spurs’ top scorer in three of this seven-game slaughter. San Antonio is averaging 105.4 points per game on the seven game streak, whereas their opponents are averaging 94.8 pints per game. The Spurs ate 9-1 (W-L) in their last ten games.
The Spurs bench is also playing well. Two of the last seven games featured non-starters as top scorers. Against the Mavericks, guard/forward Danny Green had an excellent performance with 18 point, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. He is one of the new uprising stars on the Spurs. DeJuan Blair, center, is the other bench star who racked up 23 points and 7 rebounds against the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday, March 24. San Antonio should have no problem finding help from the bench after the acquisition of former Portland Trailblazers guard Patrick Mills, former Milwaukee Buck guard/forward, Stephen Jackson, and former Charlotte Bobcat forward/center, Boris Diaw. Patrick Mills will supply support when guard, Tony Parker, needs a breather, and Jackson and Diaw will provide more height and skill to the Spurs defense.
Coach Pop and Tim Duncan are in the beginning of their final years, so Pop has been benching Duncan to save him for the playoffs. The famed #21, Duncan has brought the Spurs four NBA championships in his career and the window for another is closing fast. Coach Popovich is also in the process of preparing the Spurs for the future, so do not expect them to tank when he and Duncan leave. Coach Pop is testing many different strategies right now to determine what is best for the postseason, and whatever he is doing now seems to be working.
Coach Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs have a 36-14 (W-L) record this season. They average 4.8 more points per game than their opponents. The Spurs are an all-around team this year with continuous stellar performances from rookies like guard/forward, Kawhi Leonard, all the way to 15-year veterans like Tim Duncan. The Spurs may only be second place in the Western Conference, but don’t doubt them for a second. This seven-game winning streak shows what the San Antonio Spurs are capable of come playoff time.
