Last Monday, a former member of congress and current State of Texas Governor Nominee Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke kicked off his first day of a Texas College Tour by making a stop in the 2-1-0. O’Rourke held a rally in the Student Union Center on the main campus of UTSA. The roadrunner community showed out as the line into the event was out the door with many UTSA students and alumni showing up to hear O’Rourke speak. This was his second time on campus in the past few years as he also visited UTSA back in 2018.
O’Rourke opened up his speech by talking about “the ways Texans have been failed” by current Texas governor Greg Abbott. O’Rourke spoke about a wide variety of problems he sees with the current governor: Abbott’s lack of answers and remorse for the Uvalde tragedy, the number of casualties, and Texans left without water and power during the 2021 February snow storms that made people question the Texas power grid system and also spoke to the state abortion law in Texas.
O’Rourke spoke on many of the plans that he has in mind if elected governor, like making recreational and medical marijuana legal, developing an improved work visa system for immigrants coming from the southern border, making red flag laws, and overall reconstruction of the gun purchases process, along with bringing back the legality of abortion.
O’Rourke ended his rally with meet-ups and pictures with students in attendance and left to continue his tour leading up to election day on Nov. 8.
