The Fine Art department presented The Wizard of Oz, paying homage to the original musical film from 1939.
The play brought laughs with its witty humor and visual comedy. Standout acts included Catherine García as Dorothy, Erik Torres as Scarecrow, Santiago Salazar as Tin Man, and Zachary Carter as the Lion; honorable mention to Shawn Macari as Toto. The show’s music and songs altogether brought joy to the audience.
The strobe light effect during this show was insanely creative, using them to represent the transport of the house from Kansas to the magical land of Oz and the flying of the Wicked Witch of the West was so innovative. Another great addition to the show was when Dorothy and her friends began the second act by walking from the entrance of the theatre to the stage, making the audience feel closer to the cast and consequently the show.
The singing during the show had an overall lively and nostalgic feel, bringing the characters and the audience together. With every acquisition to Dorothy’s group, it got more joyful every time they sang “We’re Off to See the Wizard”. All of the songs played had a great sense to them, filling the theater with energy and spirit.
Despite the show having a couple of difficulties, like the microphones, there was perseverance through the acts and the actors played it off as nothing.
Overall, the show had small mishaps throughout the play but it was a great one to watch, having the good outweigh the bad. The cast did a great job with their roles, and everyone brought life back into this iconic show. The school’s production pulls off outstanding shows time and time again, and it’s always great when it’s a timeless one, like this.
