The Western Art Contest and Exhibit was created to recognize and reward the many outstanding student artists in the San Antonio area who are interested in western art. The contest began in 1996 with only 7 entries and has grown to quite a collection throughout schools and districts composing of a sum of 439 students in 2009.
The annual Western Art Contest & Exhibit took place on Saturday, December 11, 2010, in the Hall of Fame located on the Freeman Coliseum grounds. The top 50 pieces will be exhibited at the 2010 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The top 25 pieces will be auctioned to the highest bidder, with each student artist receiving the full amount of the winning bid in the form of a college scholarship award. Those whose work is among the top 50 will be invited to apply for a scholarship to the three week Western Art Academy at the prestigious Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas.
