A handful of art students have made it to Regionals in VASE, Visual Arts Scholastic Event, where they will compete for State at Marshall High School, on Feb. 28.
“MacArthur has extremely talented artists,” art teacher Mrs. Tina Barajas said. “I mean the level of work that our students are on is a professional level, so I’m pretty excited to see how they are going to do.”
Some of the students started competing in middle school while others started in high school. Even with students starting early or late, some have won at State, earning the golden seal on their artwork, their pieces then being showcased. Others have earned medals and honor recognitions.
“It’s pretty comfortable for me. I have been doing this for years,” senior and past winner of the golden seal Bonny Chu said.
The art students feel confident, not only in themselves but also in their fellow competitors.
“I think, honestly, the people that I’m in class with, they’re really, really good,” senior Christina Smith said. “So, I’m confident that their going to go far, even if I don’t.”
The whole idea of VASE is to recognize kids for their exemplary work.
“I think this is really good,” Smith said. “It pushes people to try their hardest and it gives you constructive criticism from people that aren’t your regular art teacher and are people who you don’t really know. It makes you feel more comfortable.”
