Following a walk off win over Reagan on Tuesday, the baseball team faced Johnson in a 10-8 thriller that ended with the Brahmas stealing second place in the district.
MacArthur had a rough start as Johnson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings. The team kept their composure and rallied to score 10 runs in three innings off of Johnson mistakes, contact hitting, and two critical home runs from seniors Steven Cardone and Derek Stallworth.
All hands were on deck as the Brahmas burned through 4 pitchers, (Cardone, Sandoval, Stallworth, & Jung) in this high scoring affair. The seesaw battle that included 4 lead changes eventually came to an end with the Brahmas on top and in 2nd place in the district. Senior OF/P Derek Stallworth knows the significance of getting the higher seed.
“It’s important, it gives us an opportunity to compete more and play an easier opponent in the first round,” Stallworth said.
Perhaps the team’s most impressive quality is their resilience. Back to back wins after being down 4-1 to Reagan and 5-0 to Johnson, show that this group is mentally stronger and more “clutch” than arguably any team in the city.
“[These wins] mean everything, they show who we are,” Stallworth said. “We came out to play and that’s who we are.”
Winning their final 5 games by a total score of 45-12, they definitely are a threat in the competitive Region IV. The Brahmas will now face New Braunfels in the first round of playoffs on Friday and Saturday.
