The 7th annual Walk For Autism is being held on April 16, 2011 from 8AM to 10AM at the AT&T Center. Sign ups have already closed but everybody is still welcome to sign up at the door on the day of the walk for $10. Donations will be accepted until Wednesday, April 13. Aside from saving the dolphins, Renee Cornue, junior, has turned her attention to saving the children, making an effort to help fight a disorder that affects 1 in every 110 children in America: autism.
It is a walk that she is extremely passionate about, posting flyers in teachers’ classrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and even tweeting about the event on Twitter. She is spreading the word around for a personal and effective reason.
“One of my closest friends just recently found out her younger sibling is autistic, so I became involved with this for her and her family,” Cornue said.
Autism is a disorder that many mistake for shyness or awkwardness, but it is more than the two words described. It is a disorder that causes children and adults to experience the world differently. Things that wouldn’t bother us such as a soothing noise or a gentle touch would make them uncomfortable or seem unnatural to them. They tend to stick to a certain routine and want everything to be in order. They have difficulty understanding the world around them, but ultimately they feel like the world doesn’t understand them.
This walk is more than just getting people involved and informed about the affects of autism; it is a way to raise money for research and treatment, and will allow researchers to find more information on such a complex disorder that affects over 1.5 million Americans today.
Lets get the whole MacArthur community involved and keep spreading the word around as the “Walk For Kay Kay” comes to a start.
