“IT: Welcome To Derry” works as a prequel to both IT movies from 2017 and 2019 and is set in Derry, the year 1962. The first season of “IT: Welcome To Derry” will show us the events from 27 years before the first movie takes place, and will aim to explore Pennywise’s origin while introducing us to new characters.
The first episode opens with a boy named Matty Clements, who disappears after getting into the car of a family that appeared to be normal but turned out to be just another hallucination created by IT. Matty is attacked by a monstrous baby, and it’s made clear that he did not survive the attack.
Four months later, we are introduced to Lilly, Phil, Teddy and Ronnie, who each begin experiencing their own hallucinations. Both Lilly and Ronnie hear voices, and Teddy is terrified by a lamp made of human faces. Together, they decide to investigate the mystery and end up at the movie theater, the last place Matty had been seen alive.
Inside the theater, Ronnie plays a reel where people are singing the same song she had heard in her hallucination. Matty appears on the screen and his friends try calling out to him, but the same monstrous baby that attacked Matty emerges from the screen. Teddy, Phil, and Susie (Phil’s sister) end up being brutally killed, leaving Lilly and Ronnie as the only survivors of that night.
The first episode makes the show’s tone very clear: pure terror. With such a strong season opener, it’s obvious that no one is safe in “Welcome To Derry”, and that the protagonists will have to give everything they’ve got in order to survive.
