Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 best-selling book, Project Hail Mary strives to be one of the most jaw-dropping and enjoyable sci-fi films produced this year.
Ryland Grace, a science teacher, finds himself stranded in space with no recollection of what happened. With no one to call for help and a slow progression in regaining his memory, he faces the challenge of not only figuring out how to save humanity but also how to comprehend the possibility of not doing it alone.
The movie consists of many eye-appealing visuals, such as vibrant planets, luminous stars, and carefully detailed scenes that help add more storytelling. This was made possible by the brilliant use of physical sets, puppets, light techniques, and the lack of green or blue screens all throughout the film. Project Hail Mary was not purely made on just physical sets, however. According to Variety, co-director Christopher Miller made a post on X clarifying that “no green screen” doesn’t mean “no VFX”. Miller also stated that “there were, in fact, thousands of VFX shots in the film!”
By using a variety of practical sets and effects, the audience was able to perfectly visualize and insert themselves straight into the movie, almost as if they were there as well. Every bump, shadow, and lighting gives a more natural feel to the film and creates a sense of reality that could be true. These tiny details that are spread throughout give Project Hail Mary a chance to bring even more excitement and aspiration to the watching experience.
Another great thing about this movie is that it doesn’t have too many confusing space or science terms all throughout. Sure, there are scientific terms or complications to account for in space that an average person wouldn’t know of, but Project Hail Mary puts it in a way that everyone can understand. They made sure that every explanation had enough detail for comprehension and with context clues that could be interpreted or simply stated out loud.
With the incredible acting done by Ryan Gosling, who plays the main character Ryland Grace, all of these factors come together to create an out-of-this-world movie experience.
In conclusion, I would give Project Hail Mary 4 out of 5 stars.
