With the playoffs just a win away, the football team faced Roosevelt at Heroes stadium Fri. Oct 31.
The team started slow, as the score at one point was 13-13. But eventually, the team used the pressure of the situation to explode for 28 unanswered points, resulting in a 41-13 win over the Rough Riders.
With senior running back Isiah Dennis injured, junior Daijon Williams was crucial in the team‘s win as he rushed for 128 yards on 25 carries, including one touchdown. To close out the game, senior Johnny Vance continued the strong run game by rushing for 60 yards on 14 carries.
Meanwhile, junior quarterback Josh Jung had one of his best games. He was prolific throughout the night, throwing 5 touchdowns to 4 different receivers. Picking apart the defense, he completed 59% of his passes which ultimately was too much for Roosevelt to overcome.
“We started a little slow but we picked it up in the second quarter, everything started clicking and we started dominating the game.” Jung said.
The team certainly hit their stride offensively, as 5 receivers had over 29 yards receiving, including senior John Guerrero who caught 2 impressive touchdown passes.
Jung only threw one interception, putting his season totals so far at 20 touchdowns to 4 interceptions in 9 games. With this unity, the offense can score on any team in the city.
“[We did] new drills to get the ball out on time,” Jung said. “That was a big key for us this week and we did an excellent job tonight.”
Another tough defensive performance also helped Mac put a stranglehold on the game. The Brahmas did not allow Roosevelt to score in the last two and a half quarters, they also forced three turnovers, which has become the routine for this defense.
The Johnson Jaguars are next on the schedule in a battle for third place Thur. Nov. 6. The winner also avoids playing the #1 ranked team in the city, Steele.
“We’re in the playoffs, that’s been our goal all season,” Jung said. ”Beating Johnson would be big.”
