March is a month to celebrate women’s history, and many women have gone underappreciated in many areas that they play a huge role in, such as music. Some of the most famous and influential musicians of all time are included in this short playlist and many of which have many songs advocating for feminism and equal rights for women.
You Know I’m No Good – Amy Winehouse struck onto the scene in the 2000s with a throwback sound that made her possibly the biggest soul singer of the 21st century before her premature death in 2011.
Hard Times – Paramore has been one of the highest-charting rock bands since they have been active, and lead-member Hayley Williams is a lot of what makes the band as popular as they are. She sings many empowering anthems as well as catchy pop-punk songs that make the band widely loved and acclaimed.
Dreams – Stevie Nicks is probably the most well-known member of Fleetwood Mac, and the song “Dreams”, written and sung by Nicks, was the band’s only #1 hit in the US and is still relevant to this day.
Space Song – The definitely dream-pop band, Beach House has been around the indie scene since the early 2000s and is gaining more traction than ever now. The band is led by vocalist and instrumentalist Victoria Legrand, and their hit song “Space Song” has amassed over 350,000,000 streams on Spotify alone.
Respect – Aretha Franklin is one of the most popular soul singers of all time and has so many empowering hits, but “Respect” stands out above the rest as an empowerment anthem.
Team – Lorde has been hovering between the mainstream pop scene and the indie-pop scene ever since she broke out in 2013 with major hits such as “Team” and Royals”, and she was only 16 when these two tracks were released.
Run The World (Girls) – Beyoncé is a music icon in every sense of the word, and her longevity proves that. She’s had hits in every era of her career, such as 2003’s “Crazy In Love”, 2016’s “Formation”, and 2011’s “Run the World (Girls)”.
Si Una Vez – One of Selena’s essential songs, as well as an essential Tejano song, “Si Una Vez” is the ninth track on Selena’s 1994 album, “Amor Prohibido”. The song was also re-released as a single in 1995, right before the singer’s murder in March of that year.
