An addition has been made to the Choir program this year named The Iris Bulbs. They’re a small, all girl A Capella group directed by the new choir director Ms. Mendez. They performed for the first time on Nov. 16, where they showcased the group’s talent.
A Capella is making music without instruments, so beat boxing, and then layering harmonies, just to give well known and loved music a different feel. Before this new A Capella group was formed there was Premiere and Final Cut wich was PFC who went to competitions, and there was JV aperture who were less competitive. The creation of The Iris Bulbs was extremely personal to its members. Its members chose almost every detail of the group including the colors, the name and the whole meaning of the group.
“We got to customize everything pretty much. We picked our name as a group, our colors, our meaning, what we’re doing, it’s all our own,” Petzold said.
This level of intimacy would have likely not been able to have been achieved with the larger A Capella groups of the past.
“I think it’s more intimate since there’s not so many people, and we’re all girls, it’s only girls. I think it’s always been a mixed group, but we’re only treble, so I think that makes us closer in a way,” Petzold said.
The Iris Bulbs performed for the first time during the pop show on Nov. 16, where they sang a wide variety of arrangements, both bought and original.
“We just did wildest dreams by taylor Swift, and we had bought that arrangement from someone online that had make it, and then our teacher Ms. mendez had arranged a Selena medley, we did a Selena medley with Dreaming of you, Como la flor, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, and then back into Dreaming of you,” Petzold said.
The Iris Bulbs are a breath of fresh air for Choir, and are worth supporting. So next time that there’s a choir show don’t be shy, go see the abilities of the new promising group The Iris Bulbs for yourself.
“This year they decided that they wanted to try something new. Aperture’s still gonna be a thing but we put it on pause for this year, and we started a treble group where it’s just girls and there’s only 9 of us,” Sophomore Iris Bulbs member Amber Petzold stated.
