The first season of the 2005 show “Prison Break,” consisting of 22 episodes, tells the story of a structural engineer who gets arrested to break out of a prison he helped design in order to save his falsely accused brother who is due to be executed in a month’s time. The mastermind behind this plan, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller), methodically plans his attempt to help his brother escape, Lincoln Burrows (played by Dominic Purcell), who is innocently serving time on Death row for the murder of the Vice President’s brother. Each episode, from the arrest of Scofield to the finale of the season, is full of suspense and holes in his plan that leave the viewer eager for the start of every new episode. While Burrows’ lawyers face an impossible task of getting their final appeal accepted, the Secret Service takes drastic measures to keep the case closed.
I personally love this show due to the constant suspense as the scenes switch during seemingly breakthrough moments. Each episode growing closer to the outcome the viewer is craving makes them more enthusiastic and desperate for every new one. As Michael’s plan is slowly coming together, Lincoln is closer to being put to death, his lawyers are closer to finding the truth about his case, and new roadblocks present themselves, delaying the escape the viewer is craving. Each new episode gives the viewer empathy towards prisoners or other characters. This season shines light on the bad of people, encouraging their escape. On their path to freedom, Michael shows his brilliance inside of the prison, meticulously planning and expecting every obstacle the viewer is, at the time, unaware of. He is regarded as a genius and evades suspicion of law enforcement through the duration of the season.
Overall, Prison Break Season 1, despite working with mafia bosses and mass murderers, pins Michael Scofield as the “hero” for saving his innocent brother. I personally would recommend this season to absolutely everybody who can handle the rating of TV-14, as it is one of the most action packed and excitement filled seasons in all of TV history.
I rate this 5/5 stars, and absolutely love it.
