Trees all over the campus have had to be cut down in the past week due to them being broken by harsh weather conditions. Principal Hernandez made the overall decision, with the process taking 4 days.
As of now, the decision whether or not to remove or keep the tree stumps is undecided. There are multiple factors that go into this decision, such as the current health of the trees.
“The district is contracting someone to come take a look and tell us if they’re rotten,” Hernandez said.
If the trees are infected with viruses, its stump will be removed. Hernandez has asked for a review for all the trees on campus, as many of them are aged and dying.
“In the next few weeks, you might see trees around the campus that have a bar to hold their branches up because a branch is already dying,” Hernandez said. “What we’re gonna hope is they’ll give the trees some medicine.”
Many of the trees around campus are 100+ years old and it would be a devastating loss of history and plant life if these trees were simply cut down. If efforts are still able to be made to save these century old trees, action to preserve them will be taken.
“We also are gonna have to plant trees this summer to replace them because there is an ordinance,” Hernandez said. “We’re gonna have to plant some new trees.”
