The UIL Academic Tournament students recently competed in was hosted at Mac on March 28. The school placed 3rd overall and many students received medals. Students showed their skills.

Some students placed high and advanced to regionals. Hailey Ramirez got 1st place in the news writing competition. Jose Guerrero got 1st place in literary criticism and 2nd in ready writing, and Emerald Torres got 2nd in feature writing. These results show strong performance in writing competitions.

Other students also helped the team succeed. Leonardo Garcia got 1st in editorial writing and Kaii Campos got 1st in copy editing. The journalism team also placed 2nd overall. In other competitions, Armando Duenas won 1st in accounting, Wai Aung won 3rd in calculator, 2nd in science and 2nd in chemistry, Alana Ortiz placed 2nd in the Lincoln Douglas Debate, and 2nd place in spelling was Andrea Salazar.
“My biggest fear was not being able to do it or messing up. I was really nervous at first, but then I tried to calm down and do my best,” Ramirez said. “It was hard, but I kept going. In the end, I felt better because I actually did it.”
