Sparks flew on
Tuesday, Oct. 28, when the orchestra brought the public their first concert of the year, a fall show filled with dancing, playful fiesta songs and fun.
The event lasted from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The concert was also the second annual Enchilada Fundraiser dinner. It included performances from the three orchestras, as well as Folklorico and the orchestras from Garner and Bradley Middle Schools.
“I always like getting the first show done,”
Sarah Hayter, the orchestra director, said.
“Like, ripping off the Band-Aid each year. So [the show] was good,”
Folklorico performed two numbers, “La Bruja,” which opened the show and “La Bamba.” The dancers put on an impressive display by dancing with burning candles on their heads and tying ribbons around their feet. Under the direction of Hayter, the Sinfonia, Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras each performed 2 songs. Each song was picked from a traditional composer who was Mexican, Mexican-American or Brazilian. The fiesta theme also allowed Orchestra to invite Folklorico to perform in the show.
The middle schools, Garner and Bradley, contributed one piece each: Garner performed “Rhumbolero” (directed by Phyllis Malone) and Bradley performed “Fiesta Time” (directed by Camille Matthys and Karen George). In the middle of the show, the orchestra and band presented the chance to sign up for the spring 2027 trip to New York City. To conclude the show, the orchestras from all three schools came together to perform “Habanera” under the direction of Mrs. Hayter.
“The very last piece, ‘Habanera, ‘ because that was just the big orchestra and that was fun with the 8th graders,” Hayter said. “It was a good show, I think the kids were excited.”
The next orchestra concert will take place on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.
