The district Spanish Spelling Bee concluded last Wednesday, Nov. 12 with senior Isabel Perezbedia placing first.
Isabel competed against two other opponents at the school spelling bee, Abel Garcia and Geisley Rivera, before going to district at Eisenhower Middle School.
¨I would encourage anyone to participate and do it, especially because I´m sad to see that there is such low participation, like here at school. There were only three people who participated in the spelling bee,¨ Perezbedia said.
Though the people she went up against at district were strong, Isabel’s preparation and skill were enough to win her first place at district. Native and non-native speakers of Spanish were able to compete, which allowed for a variety of competition.
¨I was like, ‘Okay, I know I have this very strong opponent, so I´m gonna do my best, and I hope they can do their best too,’ And we all did, and I´m happy because we all had the opportunity to show how good we were,¨ said Perezbedia.
The Spanish Spelling Bee is an event that is available for anyone in the school to join. As it is an annual event, Perezbedia encourages people of any background to participate.
¨We also have to promote our heritage as Hispanics, and this is a good way to do it. Not just to speak your language, but dive into it and welcome other people to know what a beautiful language Spanish is,¨ said Perezbedia.
